Push and pull get their first definitions on this three-page kindergarten sheet. A push moves something away from you, and a pull brings something closer to you. Students then look at six pictures and write Push or Pull in each box, using a two-word bank. The last page asks for two drawings, one of the student pushing something and one of them pulling something. It lays the groundwork for the investigations in NGSS K-PS2-1.

The six Push or Pull pictures and the two My Forces drawings name the direction of each force, which is the starting point for comparing pushes and pulls.

Act it out
Before the sheet, have students push a chair away and pull it back. Say "away" and "closer" as they move, the same words the definitions use.
Picture talk
For each of the six pictures, ask where the object is moving. Toward the child means pull, and away means push.
Drawing check
Look at the direction of movement in each My Forces drawing. In the pull drawing, the object should come toward the child.
