About this worksheet

The Vowel Train has mixed up 15 cargo boxes, and 1st grade students sort them into three cars by vowel team. The cars are Long A (ai, ay), Long E (ee, ea) and Long O (oa), and the bank holds words such as rain, feet, boat, leaf and toad. Two conductor questions follow: which word was hardest to sort, and one new word for each car. The 3-page sheet practices Common Core RF.1.3c. In the answer key, each car gets five words, and sample new words like tray, seed and float are listed.

How teachers use it

Read before sorting

Have partners read all 15 words aloud first. A student who reads team with a short e is not ready to sort by pattern yet.

Pocket chart sort

Cut the bank into cards and run the sort in a pocket chart before students fill in the cars. It takes about ten minutes with the whole group.

Spelling stretch

Question 2 needs spelling, not reading. Accept phonetic tries, then point students back to the car headings to check the team.
