About this worksheet

Three short phonics tasks fill this 3-page 1st grade sheet, each built around cartoon pictures. Students write ship, cheese, thumb and whale under the matching pictures from a word bank. Then they add magic e to tap, cub and pin and match the new words to a pine tree, a roll of tape and a cube. The last task has them clap cat, rabbit and butterfly into parts and circle 1, 2 or 3. It lines up with Common Core RF.1.3a, RF.1.3c and RF.1.3d, and the answer key lists every word and syllable count.

Digraph Match-Up

A word bank of ship, cheese, thumb and whale sits above four pictures, including a pirate ship and a thumbs-up hand. Students copy the right word under each one.

Magic E Words

Students add e to tap, cub and pin, write the new word, and match it to a picture of a pine tree, sticky tape or a 3D cube. The pictures are in a different order from the words.

Clap the Syllables

Cat, rab-bit and but-ter-fly appear beside pictures. Students say each word, clap the parts and circle 1, 2 or 3.

The four digraph words, pine, tape and cube, and the counts 1, 2 and 3.

How teachers use it

The snail picture

The tape picture shows a snail curled around a roll of tape, so some students write snail. Name all three Magic E pictures aloud before students match them.

Word work center

Each section is short, so the sheet splits well across three days at the word work center, one section a day.

Clap it together

Model cat and rabbit with the whole class, then let students do butterfly alone. A student who claps butterfly as two beats needs more oral practice first.
