A five-sentence read-aloud, A Day at the Park, anchors this kindergarten reading comprehension sheet. Sam takes his big red ball to the park and plays with his little dog, Pip. Students answer three picture-choice questions about the characters, the setting, and the main event, then draw their favorite part of the story. Read it twice
Read the story once for enjoyment, then again with students raising a finger each time they hear Pip. After the second read, question 1 is easy for almost everyone.
Teach the labels
Each question prints Characters, Setting, or Event beside Who, Where, or What. Point to each label as you ask, so the terms carry over to the next story.
One-on-one retell
Pull students one at a time while the others draw. Ask them to tell the story from their picture, and write their words under it.
