Three tiny stories, each only a few lines long, give kindergarten students practice with Common Core RL.K.1. Pip the dog has a shiny red ball, Sam goes down a tall yellow slide at the park, and a hungry Bear finds honey in an oak tree. Students check one of two pictures to answer who, what, where, how, and why questions. The last two tasks turn it around, as students draw a character and ask their own question. An answer key with sample questions is included.

“With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.”
Questions 1 to 6 answer who, what, where, how, and why about key details. Question 8 has students form a question of their own.
Two lines about Pip. Students choose the dog over the cat, then the ball over the bone.
Sam goes down the slide fast and smiles. Question 3 asks where he is, and question 4 asks how he feels, with a hint to think about his smile.
Bear wakes from a nap with a rumbling tummy. Students pick honey over an apple, and "Because he was hungry" over "Because he was sleepy".
Question 7 asks students to draw their own character doing something. Question 8 asks for a question about that picture, written with the teacher's help.
Reread for the why
Question 6 is the only why question. The bear in pajamas catches students who remember the nap, so reread "Bear is very hungry!" before they choose.
Question word chart
Keep a chart of who, what, and where in view for question 8. The key's samples, such as "What is the cat doing?", show the level to expect.
Partner swap
After question 8, pair students so each answers the other's question about their drawing. It takes five minutes and covers the asking half of RL.K.1.
