Short Vowels in CVC Words shows kindergarten students every short vowel before asking them to supply one. They dot and blend six words (cat, web, pig, log, sun, bug), write the missing vowel in h_t, f_n, d_g, p_n, t_b, and b_d, then read "The big pig is in the mud." and draw it. The sheet matches Common Core RF.K.3.b and RF.K.2.d. The answer key covers all three parts.
RF.K.2.d
“Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (consonant-vowel-consonant, or CVC) words.* (This does not include CVCs ending with /l/, /r/, or /x/.)”
Write the Missing Vowel isolates the medial vowel, as in d_g and t_b.

“Associate the long and short sounds with common spellings (graphemes) for the five major vowels.”
All five short vowels appear in Sound, Blend, and Read, and students write the spelling for each vowel sound in Part 2.

Some students call the bathtub a bath and get stuck on t_b. Say tub aloud as a class before they start.

A glance at the drawing box shows who read the whole sentence. A clean pig on grass means the student stopped reading at pig.
