About this worksheet

A Year 2 sheet in two parts, with the answer key on page 3. Page 1 is a table of fourteen word pairs, grouped by the word that shrinks: not, is, are, will and have. Pupils write the contraction beside each pair, from do not and has not to there is and I have. On page 2 they rewrite four sentences, changing the two underlined words into one contraction. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 2 punctuation.

How teachers use it

Group by group

Start with the five not rows. Ask pupils which letter the apostrophe replaced each time, then move on to is, are, will and have.

Spelling list

Take the five not contractions as the week's spellings and test them from the full forms.

Plenary

Read the page 2 sentences aloud in full and ask pupils to say each one again with the contraction before they write it.
