A one-page Year 2 check on contractions, with the answer key on page 2. Pupils write four contractions from word pairs (do not, we are, I will and she is), write two contractions in full (can't and they're), and add the missing apostrophe to dont, Im and isnt. The last section asks for its or It's in two sentences, one about a dog and its ball. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 2 punctuation and suits the end of a spelling unit.

Sections 1 to 3 cover nine contractions in three formats, and section 4 checks that pupils can tell it's from its.
Four word pairs to put together with an apostrophe: do not, we are, I will and she is.
Two contractions to split into two words, can't and they're.
Three words written without an apostrophe: dont, Im and isnt. Pupils write each one again with the apostrophe in the right place.

End of unit
Give it cold at the end of the contractions unit and mark it with the key in a few minutes.
Sort the results
Pupils who lose marks in section 3 need to practise where the apostrophe goes. Those who lose marks in section 4 need more work on it's and its.
Retest
Use the same sheet a few weeks later as a retrieval check, with pupils covering the page 2 key.
