It's or Its?

Year 2 EnglishContractions3 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 2 sheet on the difference between it's and its, over three pages. A box at the top explains that it's means it is or it has and its shows that something belongs to it, with an example for each. Pupils then choose between it's and its to fill ten gaps, such as The bird built ___ nest and ___ been a fun day at school. On page 2 they write one sentence of their own with each word. The key gives a sample sentence for each. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 2 punctuation.

What's inside this worksheet

It's or Its

A rule box with It's raining and The dog wagged its tail as examples, then ten gap sentences, each with it's or its to choose from.

Write Your Own Sentences

Two prompts: write a sentence with it's, and write a sentence with its. Each has four lines.

Answers

The ten answers, then a model sentence for each of the two writing prompts.

How teachers use it

Say it is

Teach pupils to say it is in the gap. If the sentence still makes sense, it needs it's. Try it on item 7, I think it is going to rain soon.

Item 9

Item 9 needs it has, not it is. Ask pupils to read it both ways and hear which one works.

Plenary

Read a few page 2 sentences aloud with the key word left out and ask the class which one was used.
