Contractions in Sentences

Year 2 EnglishContractions3 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 2 sheet that moves between full words and contractions in both directions. Page 1 has eight sentences, such as We are going swimming and He did not see the ball, with two underlined words that pupils turn into one contraction. Page 2 has four sentences with a contraction in bold, such as I can't find my shoe and Don't run in the corridor, to write out in full. The key on page 3 shows each sentence complete and also accepts can not for cannot. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 2 punctuation.

What's inside this worksheet

Make a Contraction

Eight sentences with two words underlined, from We are going swimming to I am hungry. Each one has a box for the contraction.

Write the Words in Full

Four sentences with a bold contraction to split into two words: can't, We're, It's and Don't. Each has four lines to write on.

Answers

The contraction for every sentence on page 1, then the four sentences from page 2 written in full.

How teachers use it

Reading aloud

Ask pupils to read each page 2 sentence in the full form and then the short form, so they hear that both mean the same.

Partner check

Pairs swap page 1 and check each other's contractions against the underlined words before the key comes out.

Watch can't

Item 1 on page 2 turns can't into cannot, which is one word. Mention this before pupils write it as two.
