Apostrophe in the Right Place

Year 2 EnglishContractions3 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 2 sheet in which every contraction has been written wrongly. Page 1 lists ten of them, such as do'nt, cant, wer'e and shes, and pupils write each one correctly in a box. One of the ten, its, is marked as meaning it is. Page 2 has three sentences to fix and a question asking why the apostrophe in didn't sits between the n and the t. The key on page 3 gives a model answer to that question. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 2 punctuation.

What's inside this worksheet

Apostrophe in the Right Place

Ten wrongly written words to correct: do'nt, cant, is'nt, wer'e, did'nt, its (meaning it is), shes, wont, I'l and could'nt. Each one has its own box.

Fix the Sentences

Three sentences with one contraction written wrongly, about a maths lesson, a red jumper and a football in the shed. Pupils write each whole sentence out again correctly.

Explain Why

Question 4 asks why the apostrophe in didn't goes between the n and the t. A picture shows the words did and not with the missing o above them.

Answers

The ten corrected words, the three corrected sentences and a model explanation that the apostrophe takes the place of the o in not.

How teachers use it

Error hunt

Write do'nt on the board and ask which letter is missing and where it used to be. Then pupils work through page 1 on their own.

Stop at item 6

Its and it's sound the same. Ask pupils how they know the word on the sheet needs an apostrophe, and what it stands for.

Quick marking

Use question 4 as a check. A good answer says the apostrophe takes the place of the o in not.
