Match the Contractions

Year 2 EnglishContractions3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page Year 2 sheet on contractions. In the first task pupils draw lines to match twelve contractions, from can't and I'm to I've and won't, to their full forms, which are listed in a different order on the right. The second task gives six contractions in a table with their full words beside them, and pupils write the letters the apostrophe replaces, such as wi in we'll. The last page is the answer key. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 2 punctuation.

What's inside this worksheet

Match the Contractions

Twelve numbered contractions on the left and twelve lettered full forms on the right, among them cannot, will not and I have. Pupils draw a line from each contraction to its match.

Missing Letters

A table of six contractions with the full words beside them: don't, I'm, we'll, it's, you're and isn't. Pupils write the letter or letters the apostrophe stands for.

Answers

Each contraction paired with its letter, then the six missing-letter answers, such as wi for we'll and o for isn't.

How teachers use it

Lesson starter

Write can't, I'm and we'll on the board and ask pupils to say which letters are missing before they pick up a pencil.

Cut and match

Cut the right-hand column into strips and let pairs lay each one beside its contraction. Then pupils do the missing-letters table on their own.

Talk about won't

Stop at item 12. Pupils often expect woll not, so use won't and will not to show that a few contractions change more than the missing letters.
