About this worksheet

Expanded noun phrases for Year 2, in two parts with an answer key, over three pages. Part 1 gives the example a car becomes a shiny, red car. Pupils then write a phrase with two adjectives for eight pictures, such as a dog, the house and the moon. Part 2 has six sentences, for instance Sam found a shiny, gold coin in the garden, where pupils underline the expanded noun phrase. The key gives sample phrases and shows each underlined answer. It follows England National Curriculum grammar.

What's inside this worksheet

Add Two Adjectives

Eight small pictures with their nouns: a dog, the house, a hat, the tree, a boat, the cake, a bird and the moon. Each has two lines for a phrase with two adjectives.

Find the Expanded Noun Phrase

A model sentence, We saw a big, brown bear, then six sentences to underline. They include The tall, green giant walked up the hill and We swam in the deep, blue sea on holiday.

How teachers use it

Build it on the board

Start with a car, add shiny, then add red, and let pupils say the whole phrase aloud each time before they write theirs.

Agree the underline

The key underlines her warm, woolly jumper in sentence 4, so the underline includes her. Settle with pupils whether a, the and her count before they start.

Pair swap

Pupils swap page 1 and circle the two adjectives in each other's phrases.
