Three short listening tasks make up Fun with Sounds. Kindergarten students draw lines between rhyming pictures (cat, dog, and sun on the left, frog, bun, and hat on the right), write the first letter for a pig, a bat, and a mop, then clap the syllables in apple, butterfly, and car. It lines up with Common Core RF.K.2.a, RF.K.2.b, and RF.K.2.d. The last page lists the answers for all nine items.
RF.K.2.a
“Recognize and produce rhyming words.”
Rhyme Time, where cat goes with hat, dog with frog, and sun with bun.
RF.K.2.b
“Count, pronounce, blend, and segment syllables in spoken words.”
Syllable Clapping: car is one clap, apple is two, and butterfly is three.
RF.K.2.d
“Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (consonant-vowel-consonant, or CVC) words.* (This does not include CVCs ending with /l/, /r/, or /x/.)”
First Sound Detective isolates the opening /p/, /b/, and /m/ in pig, bat, and mop.
Six clipart pictures sit in two columns: cat, dog, and sun on the left, a frog, a hamburger bun, and a winter hat on the right. Students draw a line from each picture to the one that rhymes.
Students say pig, bat, and mop out loud, listen for the opening sound, and write that letter in the box beside each picture.
Students clap the parts of apple, butterfly, and car and write 1, 2, or 3 for the number of claps they hear.

Whole-group warm-up
The rhyming pairs do not sit side by side. Cat is printed across from frog, so say each word slowly and let the class call out the match before anyone draws a line.
Name the pictures
The First Sound Detective mop has a red bow and soap suds, and some students call it a broom. Agree on pig, bat, and mop as a class before anyone writes a letter.
Clap it together
Butterfly is the only three-clap word. Clap it as a class first, then see who still gives apple a single clap.
