Partitioning Rectangles into Rows and Columns

2nd Grade MathGeometry4 pages

About this worksheet

Counting comes before drawing on this 2nd grade partitioning worksheet for Common Core 2.G.2. Four gridded rectangles ask for rows, columns and total squares, and two of them (2 by 4 and 4 by 2) reach the same 8 squares from opposite orientations. Students then draw their own partitions on four blank rectangles (2 by 3, 3 by 4, 4 by 3 and 2 by 5), writing each total. A brownie-pan story ends it: Maya cuts 3 rows and 5 columns, and students draw the cuts and count all 15 pieces. The answer key totals every grid by repeated addition, such as 5 + 5 + 5.

Curriculum objectives covered

2.G.2

Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares and count to find the total number of them.

Every question partitions a rectangle into same-size squares and counts them, and Part 2 covers the drawing half of the standard.

What's inside this worksheet

Part 1: Count the Rows, Columns, and Squares

Four printed grids to read, including the mirrored pair 2 by 4 and 4 by 2.

Part 2: Draw the Rows and Columns

Four blank rectangles with target partitions beside them. Straight lines and same-size squares are the task.

Part 3: Solve the Story Problem

Maya's brownie pan, drawn and then counted, with a pan illustration beside the workspace.

Answer key

Every total shown as repeated addition, with the multiplication fact in brackets for teachers.

How teachers use it

Chant the callout

Rows go across, columns go up and down. The page prints it; say it anyway before Part 2, because swapped labels are the main error.

Pair the mirrors

Put questions 1 and 4 side by side after marking. The same 8 squares in two orientations is early commutative-property ground.

Grid paper rescue

Students whose freehand lines wander can lay the blank rectangles over centimeter grid paper and trace.
