Identifying Shapes by Their Attributes

2nd Grade MathGeometry4 pages

About this worksheet

Shape Detective: Attributes and Names keeps 2nd graders counting before naming, the habit Common Core 2.G.1 is after. Four 2D shapes (a triangle, a trapezoid, a pentagon, a hexagon) each ask for sides and angles first, with the name chosen from a word bank second. A 3D spotlight then examines a cube in three steps: what shape its faces are, how many faces it has, and its name. Riddles reverse the task, describing a shape by its attributes for students to name, and the final question asks them to draw any quadrilateral with exactly 4 straight sides and 4 angles.

Curriculum objectives covered

2.G.1

Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.

Naming from attributes runs through all seven questions, and question 7 covers the drawing half of the standard.

What's inside this worksheet

Part 1: 2D Shape Attributes

Sides and angles counted for four pictured shapes, with names picked from a bank of Triangle, Quadrilateral, Pentagon and Hexagon.

Part 2: 3D Shape Spotlight

Three sub-questions on the pictured cube: the face shape (square), the face count (6) and the solid's name.

Part 3: Riddle Match and Draw

Three attribute riddles to name, such as 5 straight sides and 5 vertices, then a blank box for drawing a quadrilateral.

Answer key

Includes the accepted range for the drawing: any closed 4-sided polygon, from square to parallelogram.

How teachers use it

Count with the pencil tip

Students touch each side while counting. Miscounts on the pentagon and hexagon come from eyeballing.

Four different quadrilaterals

After question 7, challenge each table to produce four non-matching quadrilaterals between them.

Riddles at the door

Read Part 3's riddles aloud at line-up time the next day. Same standard, zero prep.
