Read the Coordinates

Year 4 MathsCoordinates3 pages

About this worksheet

Reading coordinates in the first quadrant for Year 4, over three pages. A 10 by 10 island map holds ten places, including a cave, a lighthouse, a hut and a waterfall. Pupils write the coordinates of each place, then read four coordinates and name the place found there. Both tasks remind pupils to go along the corridor first and then up the stairs. The last page is the answer key. It follows England National Curriculum position and direction.

What's inside this worksheet

Find the Coordinates

An island map on a grid numbered 0 to 10, with ten places from the treasure and the palm tree to the bridge on the y-axis. Pupils complete sentences such as The cave is at ( , ).

Name the Place

A second copy of the map and four coordinates to read: (5, 9), (8, 4), (0, 5) and (6, 2). Pupils write the name of the place in a box.

Answers

The coordinates of all ten places, then the four place names for Task 2.

How teachers use it

First coordinates lesson

Use Task 1 before pupils meet coordinates in the abstract. The corridor and stairs reminder gives them a rule for which number comes first.

Spotting swapped numbers

Look at the cave (5, 9) and the volcano (8, 4) in Task 1. Pupils who write (9, 5) or (4, 8) have swapped the two numbers.

Make your own map

Pupils draw an island of their own on squared paper, then swap it with a partner who writes the coordinates of every place.
