Coordinates Check

Year 4 MathsCoordinates2 pages

About this worksheet

An end-of-unit coordinates check for Year 4, on one page with the answer key on page 2. Pupils read A (2, 6), B (5, 1) and C (7, 4) from a grid numbered 0 to 8, then plot D, E and F on the same grid. They find the fourth corner of a square from three given corners and describe the translation of a triangle between two grids. The key lists every answer. It follows England National Curriculum position and direction.

Curriculum objectives covered

Geometry - position and direction

โ€œdescribe positions on a 2-D grid as coordinates in the first quadrantโ€

Questions 1 and 2 ask pupils to read three points and plot three more, including F (0, 7) on the y-axis.

Geometry - position and direction

โ€œplot specified points and draw sides to complete a given polygonโ€

Question 3 gives three corners of a square and asks for the fourth.

Geometry - position and direction

โ€œdescribe movements between positions as translations of a given unit to the left/right and up/downโ€

Question 4 asks pupils to describe the move from the Start triangle to the End triangle.

What's inside this worksheet

Read the Points

Question 1 shows points A, B and C on a grid numbered 0 to 8. Pupils write the coordinates of each one in brackets.

Plot the Points

Question 2 gives D (1, 3), E (6, 6) and F (0, 7) to plot and label on the same grid. F sits on the y-axis.

Missing Corner

Question 3 gives three corners of a square at (2, 2), (5, 2) and (5, 5). Pupils write the fourth corner.

Describe the Translation

Question 4 shows a Start triangle and an End triangle on a second grid. Pupils complete the sentence Move ... squares right and ... square down.

Answers

All four answers, with a note on where D, E and F should sit on the first grid.

How teachers use it

End of unit

Set it as a ten-minute check after the last coordinates lesson. Pupils who miss question 4 usually count the right and down moves the wrong way round.

Before the unit

Use question 1 on its own the week before you start. It shows who still writes the y number first.

Marking in pairs

Pupils swap sheets and mark question 2 against the key. Look for D, E and F sitting on the grid crossings, not inside the squares.
