Complete the Shape

Year 4 MathsCoordinates2 pages

About this worksheet

A one-page Year 4 coordinates sheet, with an answer key on page 2. Six grids from 0 to 8 each show part of a shape: two squares, two rectangles, a right-angled isosceles triangle and a parallelogram. The first grid shows corners at (1, 1), (4, 1) and (4, 4). Pupils write the missing corner under each grid. A challenge asks for the four corners of a square with one corner at (0, 0) and sides 3 long. It follows England National Curriculum Year 4 position and direction.

Curriculum objectives covered

Geometry - position and direction

โ€œdescribe positions on a 2-D grid as coordinates in the first quadrantโ€

Pupils read the coordinates of the plotted points on each grid and write the missing corner as a pair.

Geometry - position and direction

โ€œplot specified points and draw sides to complete a given polygonโ€

The grids show the sides already drawn, so pupils decide where the last corner goes. Question 7 has them build a square from one point.

What's inside this worksheet

Complete the Shape

Six small grids with plotted points joined by lines. Pupils write the missing corner in the brackets under each one.

The Triangle

Item 5 shows only two points, (2, 2) and (2, 6), and asks for the third corner of a right-angled isosceles triangle with the right angle at (2, 2).

Challenge

Question 7 asks for the whole-number coordinates of a square in the first quadrant with one corner at (0, 0) and sides 3 units long, in a box for working.

Answers

The missing corner for items 1 to 6 and the four corners for the challenge, which pupils may list in any order.

How teachers use it

Warm-up

Read out the three points on grid 1 and ask pupils to predict the fourth before they write it. Check on the grid with a ruler.

Whiteboards

Copy the grid for item 6 onto the board and ask where the missing corner of the parallelogram goes. Pupils hold up the pair, then compare with a partner.

Early finishers

Give question 7 to pupils who finish first, then ask them to draw their square on squared paper and check each corner.
