Plot the Points

Year 4 MathsCoordinates3 pages

About this worksheet

Plotting points in the first quadrant for Year 4, over three pages. Pupils plot twelve lettered points, from A (2, 5) to L (6, 6), on a blank grid numbered 0 to 10. They then use their own grid to answer three questions about a shared x-coordinate and about points on the axes. The key shows the completed grid. It follows England National Curriculum position and direction.

Curriculum objectives covered

Geometry - position and direction

โ€œdescribe positions on a 2-D grid as coordinates in the first quadrantโ€

Pupils place twelve coordinate pairs, including C (0, 8) on the y-axis and G (3, 0) on the x-axis, then answer questions from their own grid.

What's inside this worksheet

Plot and Label

Twelve points in boxes, such as C (0, 8), G (3, 0) and K (10, 6). Pupils mark each with a neat cross on the blank grid and write its letter beside it.

Check Your Grid

Three questions about the plotted points: which two share an x-coordinate, which lies on the y-axis and which lies on the x-axis. Each has a boxed space for the answer.

Answers

The grid with all twelve points plotted and labelled, then the three answers.

How teachers use it

Whole-class start

Read two or three points aloud and have pupils point to them on the grid before they mark anything.

Axis points

Questions 2 and 3 are the ones pupils miss. Ask them to say the y-coordinate of G and the x-coordinate of C before they write an answer.

Peer marking

Pupils swap sheets and check each other's grid against the key. Look for crosses sitting on the grid crossings, not inside the squares.
