Year 4 MathsCoordinates3 pages

About this worksheet

Plotting and joining coordinates for Year 4, over three pages. Pupils plot (2, 1), (8, 1), (8, 6), (5, 9) and (2, 6) on a blank grid and join them in order to make a house, then add a door. On page 2 they add a window and answer four questions about the picture, including the coordinates of the top of the roof. The key shows the finished drawing. It follows England National Curriculum position and direction.

Curriculum objectives covered

Geometry - position and direction

โ€œplot specified points and draw sides to complete a given polygonโ€

Steps 1 to 3 give lists of points to plot and join in order, and the joined points make the house, the door and the window.

Geometry - position and direction

โ€œdescribe positions on a 2-D grid as coordinates in the first quadrantโ€

Question 3 asks pupils to read off the coordinates of the top of the roof from their own drawing.

What's inside this worksheet

Draw the Picture

A blank grid numbered 0 to 10 and two lists of points. Step 1 joins the house outline from (2, 1) round to (5, 9) and back, and Step 2 adds a door from (4, 1) to (6, 1).

Finish the Picture and Questions

Step 3 gives the window points (3, 4), (4, 4), (4, 5) and (3, 5). Four questions follow, including what the picture shows, the shape of the roof and the shape of the window.

Answers

The finished house drawn on a grid, with the four answers underneath.

How teachers use it

Ruler practice

Check the first line from (2, 1) to (8, 1) before pupils carry on. A slipped first point spoils the whole house.

Fast finishers

Pupils invent a chimney with four coordinates of their own, then give the list to a partner to plot.

Shape talk

Use questions 2 and 4 to talk about the triangle roof and the square window. Pupils say how they can tell from the coordinates.
