Time, Place or Manner?

Year 4 EnglishFronted Adverbials3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page Year 4 sort on the three kinds of fronted adverbial. Page 1 shows fifteen adverbials in boxes, from Later that day and Beneath the stairs to As fast as he could. Pupils write each one into a Time, Place or Manner column, five to a column. On page 2 they write three sentences of their own, one for each type, each starting with a chosen adverbial and a comma. The key lists the sorted columns and gives a sample sentence for each type. It follows England National Curriculum grammar.

What's inside this worksheet

Sort the Fronted Adverbials

Fifteen boxed adverbials such as At midnight, Across the river and With a huge grin, and a table headed Time (When?), Place (Where?) and Manner (How?).

Write Your Own Sentences

Three prompts, one each for Time, Place and Manner. Pupils pick an adverbial from their table and build a full sentence around it.

Answers

The completed table, then sample sentences such as Outside the castle, the knight waited on his horse.

How teachers use it

Card sort

Cut the fifteen boxes apart and let pairs sort them on the desk before anyone writes. Disagreements are the useful part.

Quick talk

Ask whether In silence tells you when or how. Pupils who say how can explain why it is not about time.

Writing warm-up

Use the sample sentences in the key as models, then ask pupils to swap the adverbial for one from another column and see what changes.
