Find the Fronted Adverbial

Year 4 EnglishFronted Adverbials3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page Year 4 worksheet on fronted adverbials. A box on page 1 says that a fronted adverbial comes at the start of the sentence, tells when, where or how, and is followed by a comma. Pupils underline the adverbial in ten sentences, from Before sunrise, the farmer fed the hens to After school, Ben played football in the park. Page 2 asks them to sort the ten adverbials into when, where and how. The key underlines every adverbial and lists the sorted answers. It follows England National Curriculum grammar.

Fronted Adverbials

A rule box, then ten sentences to underline, such as Under the old bridge, a troll was waiting and With a huge smile, Mia opened her birthday present.

Sort the Fronted Adverbials

Three questions with writing lines. Pupils copy the adverbials from page 1 under when, where and how.

Answers

Each sentence with its adverbial underlined, then the sorted lists with the sentence numbers in brackets.

How teachers use it

Starter

Read sentences 1 to 3 aloud and ask pupils to tap the desk where they hear the pause. That pause is where the comma sits.

Peer marking

Pupils swap sheets and mark page 1 against the key. Long ones like At the back of the cave are the ones most often half underlined.

Follow-up writing

Ask pupils to write one new sentence for when, one for where and one for how, using their page 2 lists as a model.
