Year 3 EnglishPrepositions3 pages

About this worksheet

Prepositions of time for Year 3, over three pages. Page 1 has a word bank of before, after, during, until, at and since, and ten sentences about a school day with one gap each, such as Nobody talks ___ the fire drill. Several sentences carry a clue, like Assembly starts at nine and We line up at five to nine. Page 2 asks pupils to write about their weekend using before, after and during. The key gives all ten answers and a note with three sample sentences. It follows England National Curriculum grammar.

Curriculum objectives covered

Writing - vocabulary, grammar and punctuation

โ€œExpressing time, place and cause using conjunctions (for example, when, before, after, while, so, because), adverbs (for example, then, next, soon, therefore), or prepositions (for example, before, after, during, in, because of)โ€

All ten gaps need a preposition of time, and the weekend task asks for before, after and during in pupils' own sentences.

What's inside this worksheet

Choose the Best Preposition

A six-word bank and ten gap-fill sentences. Some come with a time clue, such as School ends at three. We go home at quarter past three, ___ school.

Write About Your Weekend

A picture of two children playing football in a park, with lines for pupils to write about their weekend using before, after and during.

Answers

One word for each of the ten gaps, then a note and three sample sentences for the weekend writing, such as I brushed my teeth before bedtime.

How teachers use it

Quick start

Read three or four sentences aloud with the gap left out and let pupils call out the missing word before they write anything.

At and since

Questions 2, 7 and 8 use at and since. Point out that at goes with a clock time and since with a starting point, then ask for a new example of each.

Talk then write

Before the weekend task, pupils tell a partner one thing they did before, after and during something else. The sentences then come more easily.
