Say it, count the words, then write it. That rule runs through seven sentence tasks for Year 1, over three pages. Pupils fill in I can see a ___ with things in the park. They complete The ___ is ___ about the weather, then finish open starters such as A cat likes to. The last task is a sentence about their favourite food, checked for a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop. The key gives sample answers only. It follows England National Curriculum composition.

Use it in the first term as pupils move from phrases to full sentences. The frames keep the writing short.

Before question 5, clap out each spoken sentence so pupils count the words they need to write.
