Recount Writing: My Weekend

Year 1 EnglishWriting3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page recount sheet for Year 1 about the weekend. It opens with a four-sentence model, A Trip to the Park, with First, Next, Then and At the end in bold. Pupils finish three sentences about their own weekend using with, because and before. Part 2 turns the four time words into sentence starters, with two lines for each, and a three-box checklist asks pupils to re-read for sense, capitals, full stops and finger spaces. Model answers cover both parts. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 1 writing composition.

What's inside this worksheet

A Trip to the Park

Write Your Weekend Recount

Four sentences to finish in order, starting First, Next, Then and At the end, I felt.

Check Your Writing

Three tick boxes: the sentences make sense, each has a capital letter and a full stop, and there are clear finger spaces.

Answers

Sample completions for all seven items, such as pancakes for breakfast with my dad and a visit to nan and grandad.

How teachers use it

Shared reading

Read A Trip to the Park together and have pupils clap on each bold time word. Then cover the words and ask what happened first and last.

Monday morning

Give it out on a Monday while the weekend is fresh. Talk partners tell each other their four events before anyone picks up a pencil.

Partner check

Before you mark it, pairs read Part 2 to each other and tick the checklist together. A missing full stop is easier to hear than to see.
