Picture Sentence Writing: Support Sheet

Year 1 EnglishWriting4 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 1 writing support sheet for pupils who cannot yet write a sentence on their own. Six picture boxes show a dog, a girl on a swing, a cat on a mat, a boy with a football, a frog on a log and a bird in a nest. Each box gives a starter such as The dog ... and three helper words. Pupils say the sentence out loud, write it on two lines and tick capital letter, finger spaces and full stop. The answers page has a model sentence for each picture. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 1 writing.

What's inside this worksheet

Say it first

A reminder box telling pupils to speak the whole sentence out loud, leave finger spaces and end with a full stop.

Picture sentences 1 to 6

Six boxes, each with a picture, a starter such as The cat ..., helper words such as cat, nap and mat, two writing lines and three tick boxes.

Answers

One model sentence per picture, such as 'The frog sits on a log', and a note to accept any sensible sentence.

How teachers use it

Adult-led group

Do box 1 with a small group. Say the sentence together, count the words on fingers, then write it.

Picture talk

Before writing, ask what else the cat or the bird could be doing. Pupils who add an idea of their own are ready for an unsupported sheet.

Check before ticking

Teach pupils to tick the three boxes only after they point to the capital, each space and the full stop.
