Writing Instructions: How to Make a Jam Sandwich

Year 1 EnglishWriting2 pages

About this worksheet

A one-page instruction-writing sheet for Year 1, with a page of model answers. Pupils say each step out loud, then finish four frames for making a jam sandwich. Every frame starts with a time word and a bold verb: First, take; Next, spread; Then, put; Last, cut. Part 2 asks pupils to finish a sentence with before and to write one new instruction of their own. The key gives answers such as take two slices of bread and cut the sandwich in half because it is easier to eat. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 1 writing composition.

What's inside this worksheet

Step by Step

Four gapped steps. Pupils add what to take, what to spread the jam with, why the top slice goes on and why the sandwich is cut in half.

Why Order Matters

A before sentence to finish, then three lines for one new instruction that starts with a bossy verb.

Answers

Model completions for all six items, with a note to accept any sensible answer that is phonetically plausible.

How teachers use it

Make it for real

Bring in bread, jam and a plastic knife and follow one pupil's steps exactly as written. A missing step shows up very quickly.

Mime the verbs

Have pupils act out take, spread, put and cut before they write, so each bold word has an action to go with it.

Early finishers

Pupils who finish question 6 can write all the steps for a second job, such as washing their hands or packing a school bag.
