About this worksheet

A one-to-one Phase 5 check for Year 1. Pupil Card 1 shows 20 graphemes, from ay, ou and ie to the five split digraphs and ow as in snow. Pupil Card 2 mixes 10 real words such as wheel, haul and cube with 10 alien words such as shoud, phid and blone, four to a row. The teacher record sheet has correct, incorrect and notes columns for every item, with scores out of 20, 10 and 10 and lines for next steps. The answers give the expected sound for each grapheme and the sounds in each of the 20 words. It follows England National Curriculum word reading.

Answers

The sound for each grapheme with example words, alternatives to accept such as ie in chief and ey in they, and each word broken into its sounds.

How teachers use it

Half-termly check

Sit with one child for about five minutes. Use the notes column to write down exactly what they said for ue or ey.

Real words against aliens

A child who reads the real words but stumbles on the aliens may be reading from memory. Plan blending practice for them.

Set up groups

Copy the graphemes each child missed from the next-steps lines onto one class list, then group children by those gaps.
