Alternative Spellings: ai, ay and a-e

Year 1 EnglishPhonics3 pages

About this worksheet

A word sort for the long a sound in Year 1, set up as a phonics postbag that has split open. Pupils read sixteen words, including rain, spray, crayon, chained, pancake and holiday, and write each one under ai, ay or a-e. The column headings remind them that ai usually sits in the middle of a word and ay at the end. On page 2 they say which word was hardest to place and think of one new word for each spelling. The answer page gives the full sort and notes on likely tricky words such as crayon. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 1 phonics.

Curriculum objectives covered

Reading - word reading

โ€œRespond speedily with the correct sound to graphemes (letters or groups of letters) for all 40+ phonemes, including, where applicable, alternative sounds for graphemesโ€

Every word in the box has the same sound written three ways, so pupils sort by the grapheme they see.

Reading - word reading

โ€œRead other words of more than one syllable that contain taught GPCsโ€

Crayon, pancake and holiday make pupils find the long a inside a longer word.

What's inside this worksheet

Postbag word sort

Sixteen words in a box and a three-column table headed ai (usually in the middle), ay (usually at the end) and a-e (split digraph).

Spot the Pattern

Two short written questions on the trickiest word to sort and one new word for each spelling.

Answers

The finished sort, with five ai, six ay and five a-e words, plus notes on crayon, chained, pancake and holiday.

How teachers use it

Sort with cards first

Cut the sixteen words into cards and let pairs sort them on the table before anyone writes in the columns.

Talk about crayon

Crayon breaks the 'ay at the end' rule. Ask pupils why the heading says usually.

Spelling follow-up

Collect the new words from question 3 and use them as next week's spelling list, with one word for each spelling.
