Year 1 EnglishCapital Letters3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page Year 1 sheet on matching small letters to their capitals. Pupils draw lines to join a to m with the capitals D, A, F, B, C, H, E, K, G, M, I, J and L, which sit in a mixed order in the right-hand column. Page 2 asks for the capital of n to w in ten boxes, then for the pupil's own name starting with a capital. The key on page 3 lists every pair by row number. It follows England National Curriculum handwriting and punctuation for Year 1.

What's inside this worksheet

Join the Letters

Thirteen small letters, a to m, stand beside thirteen capitals in a mixed order. Pupils draw a line from each small letter to its capital.

Write the Capital Letters

Ten boxes, one beside each of n, o, p, q, r, s, t, u, v and w, for pupils to write the capital letter.

Write your name

Two dotted lines for the pupil's own name, which must start with a capital letter.

Answers

Each pair from the joining task, such as d to D in row 1 and m to M in row 10. Then n = N through to w = W, and a note to look for a name that begins with a capital, like Sam or Amina.

How teachers use it

Letter names

Ask pupils to say each pair aloud as they join it. You will quickly hear who still mixes up l and I.

Handwriting follow-up

Pick the capitals that pupils wrote slowest in the Part 2 boxes and have them practise those on lined paper.

Early finishers

Pupils who finish can write the names of two friends under their own, checking that each begins with a capital.
