Kindergartners start with a drawing of their family or a special person in the community, then show it to a partner and say who is in the picture. Next come two community helpers, a firefighter with a hose and a mail carrier holding a letter, with a question under each about how that person helps the town. Two partner questions close the sheet. It fits C3 Framework indicator D2.Civ.2.K-2. The third page lists the expected answers for the two helper questions.

The Who Are They section, where students say how the firefighter keeps them safe and how the mail carrier delivers letters and packages to homes.

Talk Time and Partner Chat, which ask students to listen closely to a partner and then say something back.
Students draw their family or a community member in a large box, adding as many details as they can. A Talk Time prompt then asks them to show the drawing to a partner and "Speak loudly and clearly."
Two helper pictures sit beside short questions. Students name the firefighter and say how they help the town, then name the mail carrier and say whether they have ever seen one at their house.
Partners take turns with two questions: their favorite person to play with in the family, and their favorite place in the community, such as a park or library.
First week of the unit
Collect the drawings as a getting-to-know-you page. The family pictures tell you who lives with each child before you plan any family-themed lessons.
Turn and talk practice
Model the Talk Time step yourself with your own drawing. Kindergartners copy the loud, clear voice far better after they see one example.
Mail carrier follow-up
Question 2 asks if students have seen a mail carrier at home. Many have not noticed, so ask families to watch for the mail that evening and report back.
