Beavers, birds, squirrels, tree roots, and people all change the places they live on this five-page kindergarten worksheet, matched to NGSS K-ESS2-2. Students first circle who made each change, such as a dam of sticks or a sidewalk cracked from below. Part 2 asks why the change was made: for a home, for food, or for water. For the last question, students draw themselves watering a plant or building a bird feeder. The answer key lists all ten answers.

Parts 1 and 2 pair each change with its reason, which gives students evidence for a claim. Question 10 lets them show a change they could make themselves.
Five changes, each with two choices: a dam of sticks (Beaver or Dog), a nest of twigs (Fish or Bird), holes to hide acorns, a cracked sidewalk, and seeds in a garden box.
Questions 6 to 9 name the need. The beaver's dam makes a home, the squirrel's holes store food, the tomato garden gives food, and the tree roots stretch out to find water.
Question 10 asks students to draw themselves changing the environment to help living things, by watering a plant or building a bird feeder.
Photo evidence
Show a real photo of a beaver dam before question 1. Students then have something to point to when they say why the beaver built it.
Schoolyard hunt
After Part 1, walk the school grounds and look for roots lifting the sidewalk or holes dug by squirrels. Students add what they find to their drawings.
Claim and reason
Use Part 2 to practice the sentence "The squirrel digs holes because it needs food." The same frame fits all four questions.
