US Landmarks and Regions Map

5th Grade Social StudiesGeography3 pages

About this worksheet

Six famous US landmarks and a map of five regions make up this 3-page 5th grade geography worksheet. Students label cartoon pictures of the Statue of Liberty, the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Gateway Arch, and the White House from a word bank, and write a sentence about each. Then they use a map of the West, Southwest, Midwest, Southeast, and Northeast to answer two questions about their own region and the features between the Northeast and the Southwest. It links to C3 Framework indicator D2.Geo.2.3-5. The answer page lists each landmark with its state.

โ€œUse maps, satellite images, photographs, and other representations to explain relationships between the locations of places and regions and their environmental characteristics.โ€

What's inside this worksheet

Famous Landmarks

Six pictures sit in a two-row grid with a blank under each. Students write the landmark name from the word bank and one sentence on where it is or what makes it special. The word bank order does not match the picture order.

Understanding US Regions

Students read a simple color-block map of five regions, which shows no mountains or rivers. Question 1 asks which region they live in and one feature of its climate or geography. Question 2 asks for two physical features they might cross going from the Northeast to the Southwest.

How teachers use it

Map corner

Put a large wall map of the US beside the sheet. Students find each landmark on it before they write their sentence, which gives them the state and region.

Pairs with a physical map

Set a physical map beside the sheet for question 2, since the regions map has no landforms on it. Pairs trace a route with a finger and list what they cross, such as the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains.

Postcard follow-up

Students who finish early pick one landmark and write a postcard from it, naming the region it sits in.
