Continents and Oceans by Coordinates

4th Grade Social StudiesLatitude and Longitude3 pages

About this worksheet

This 3-page 4th grade worksheet asks students to find continents and oceans from coordinates. Page 1 is a simplified world map with latitude lines at 60ยฐN, 30ยฐN, the equator, 30ยฐS and 60ยฐS, and longitude lines every 30ยฐ from 180ยฐW to 180ยฐE. A tip box reminds students to find latitude first. Page 2 lists eight coordinates and a word bank. Page 3 gives the answers.

Curriculum objectives covered

โ€œUse latitude and longitude to find a continent or ocean on a world map.โ€

All eight questions give a pair of coordinates and ask for the continent or ocean there.

โ€œGive latitude first and longitude second when reading coordinates.โ€

The tip box on page 1 sets the order, and every question on page 2 follows it.

What's inside this worksheet

World Map

Continents and oceans are named on the grid, with degree labels on all four edges. Under the map, a tip box says to move up or down from 0ยฐ for latitude, then left or right for longitude.

Find the Continent or Ocean

A word bank of eight names, from Africa to South America, and eight answer boxes beside coordinates such as 60ยฐN, 90ยฐE and 30ยฐS, 135ยฐE.

Answers

Each answer sits beside its coordinates, for example Atlantic Ocean for 30ยฐN, 30ยฐW and Indian Ocean for 30ยฐS, 75ยฐE.

How teachers use it

Read the tip together

Read the tip box aloud and model question 1. The point 0ยฐ, 30ยฐE sits on the equator, which makes it an easy first step.

Oceans last

Let students do the continents first and leave questions 2, 5 and 7 until the end. The three oceans give more trouble because there is no outline to look inside.

Write two more

Ask students to write two coordinates of their own on the back and swap with a partner. A partner who finds the answer on the map tests the order of latitude and longitude.
