About this worksheet

This 3-page 4th grade worksheet gives students practice reading coordinates on a grid. Page 1 shows an invented island with latitude lines from 10ยฐN to 40ยฐN and longitude lines from 10ยฐW to 40ยฐW, plus a reminder to write latitude first. Six places sit where lines cross. Page 2 has ten questions in two parts, and page 3 lists the answers.

What's inside this worksheet

Island Map

A lighthouse, forest, village, volcano, castle and harbor, each marked with a dot where two lines cross. Degree labels run along all four edges of the map.

Find the Coordinates

Six boxes ask for the coordinates of the lighthouse, village, volcano, harbor, forest and castle.

Name the Place

Four boxes give a pair of coordinates, such as 20ยฐN, 30ยฐW, and students write the place found there.

Answers

All ten answers, for example 40ยฐN, 40ยฐW for the lighthouse and Village for 30ยฐN, 20ยฐW.

How teachers use it

Latitude first

Point to the reminder on page 1 and have the class say latitude first aloud. Then answer question 1 together on the board.

Matching pairs

Questions 2 and 10, 3 and 7, 4 and 9, and 5 and 8 use the same four places in opposite directions. A student who gets one right and the other wrong has usually swapped the two numbers.

Draw an island

Ask students to draw their own island on graph paper, mark three places and swap with a partner. Writing coordinates for places they chose shows quickly who has the order right.
