Latitude and Longitude Check

4th Grade Social StudiesLatitude and Longitude2 pages

About this worksheet

This 2-page 4th grade check covers the basics of latitude and longitude on one page, with the answer key on page 2. Students finish two sentences about the 0° lines, answer two multiple choice questions, read a small grid that runs from 0° to 30°N and 0° to 30°E, and name the two hemispheres for a place at 20°S, 40°E. It is short enough to use as an exit ticket.

What's inside this worksheet

Fill in the Blanks

Two sentences to finish: the 0° line of latitude is the ___ and the 0° line of longitude is the ___.

Multiple Choice

Which way lines of latitude run, east to west or north to south, and whether latitude or longitude comes first in a coordinate.

Coordinate Grid

A small grid with Point A and Point B marked. Students write the latitude and longitude of each point.

Hemispheres

One short answer. A place is at 20°S, 40°E, and students name the two hemispheres it is in, on two lines.

Answers

Equator and Prime Meridian, the two multiple choice answers, 20°N, 10°E and 10°N, 30°E for the points, and Southern and Eastern for the hemispheres.

How teachers use it

Exit ticket

Hand it out in the last ten minutes of a latitude and longitude lesson. One page, six items and no map to find makes it quick to collect.

Before a unit

Give it cold at the start of the unit. Item 6 tells you who can already turn S and E into Southern and Eastern Hemispheres.

Sort by miss

When marking, sort the papers by the first item missed. A miss on item 4 means latitude first needs another go, and a miss on item 6 means hemispheres do.
