Tricky Words Bingo

2nd Grade ELAPhonics and Fluency5 pages

About this worksheet

Four different bingo cards, A to D, each hold 16 irregularly spelled words from a list of 24, including through, enough, caught, ocean and sugar. The teacher reads a sentence clue with a blank, such as "The fast train went right _____ the dark tunnel.", and 2nd grade students look for the matching word on their card. Four in a row wins. All 24 clues and answers sit in the answer key as teacher caller cards, so the game needs no prep beyond printing. It practices Common Core RF.2.3f.

What's inside this worksheet

Bingo Cards

Cards A, B, C and D, each a 4 by 4 grid with a different mix of words like rough, bought, brought, thought and young. Many words sit on more than one card, so several students can mark the same clue.

Teacher Caller Cards

A two-column table of 24 fill-in-the-blank clues and answers, from the again clue ("Do it one more time!") to splitting a cookie for half. Read them in any order.

How teachers use it

Whole-class game

Print one card per student and rotate A to D around the room. A full round of 24 clues takes about 15 minutes, and early winners can play on for a full card.

Look-alike words

Thought, bought, brought and caught are the words students confuse. Call those clues close together and watch who marks the wrong one.

Fix two clues

Edit the caller cards before you print. The sugar clue has no blank at all, and the people clue reads "A large group of humans are called _____."
