Pip the squirrel has lost his acorn stash under thick red leaves in The Winter Stash, a boxed story written for repeated reading. The directions ask for two oral readings, one for accuracy and one with expression, and question 8 has students read Pip's lines with feeling.

Question 6 asks students to use the sentence "Pip scampered over to the root" to work out what scampered means.

The Winter Stash

Pip searches by the rock, under the bush and inside the hollow log. Bella flies up high and spots a mound of dirt near the thickest root of the oak tree. Plenty of dialogue gives readers voices to practice.

Finding the Facts

Question 1 asks for Pip's big problem. Question 2 has four boxes to check for the two places he looked, and question 3 is a true or false on whether Bella dug for the acorns.

Reading Between the Lines

Students name how Pip feels and copy a sentence that shows it, explain why the leaves hid the stash, and choose a meaning for scampered from ran quickly, slept quietly or sang loudly.

Think and Respond

Question 7 asks for evidence that Bella is a good friend. Question 8 sends students back to Pip's lines to find the one that shows he is excited.

Answer key

Model answers for all eight, including False for question 3 (Bella looked from the sky while Pip dug) and "I found it! I found it!" for question 8.

How teachers use it

Timed repeated reads

Time the first read for accuracy and the second for expression, a day apart if you can. Most students read faster the second time once they know where the dialogue sits.

Reader's theater

Assign Pip, Bella and a narrator in groups of three. Lines like "Oh no!" and "I found it!" give each reader a clear feeling to match with their voice.

The question 3 trap

Skimmers often mark True for question 3. Send them back to the part where Bella says she will look from the sky while Pip stays on the ground and digs.
