Twelve spelling words fill the table at the top of this 4-page 1st grade sheet. There are short vowel words (cat, bug, hop), digraph words (ship, chat, that), magic e words (make, like) and the tricky words the, said, was and are. Students write each word twice and check it off. They copy two sentences with spaces between words, then use picture clues to fill hop, ship and said into three more. It covers Common Core L.1.2d, and the answer key lists the missing words.

The table mixes pattern words like ship and make with irregular words like said and was, and the Missing Words sentences ask for three of them again.
Students write each of the 12 words in two columns and check the last box.

Look, say, cover
For said, was and are, students look, say, cover, write and check. These three cannot be sounded out, so the second column matters most.
Finger spaces
Spacing shows at a glance in the handwriting sentences. A student who writes Thecat as one word needs a finger space reminder before the next task.
