Retell a Story Storyboard

About this worksheet

The Lion and the Mouse becomes a movie plan in this 3-page 1st grade retelling sheet. Students read the short fable, then answer three planning questions: who the characters are, what the big problem is, and what the lesson is. The main task is a six-panel storyboard, from the mouse running over the sleeping lion to the two becoming friends, with a caption under each drawing. It works toward Common Core RL.1.2. There is no answer key, so check the captions against the fable.

RL.1.2

โ€œRetell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.โ€

The six captioned panels retell the fable in order, and question 3 asks for its central message.

What's inside this worksheet

Part 1 Read the Story

Students read the fable. The lion lets the mouse go, gets caught in a hunter's net, and the mouse chews through the ropes. It ends with "Even little friends can be a big help."

Part 2 Plan Your Movie

Three prompts on the characters and the problem, and a sentence frame for the lesson: "The lesson is ___."

Part 3 Draw the Storyboard

Six panels in two rows. Panel 1 shows the beginning, Panel 6 the end, and each has a caption line.

How teachers use it

Count the events

Go through the fable twice, once for the story and once to count six events on fingers. Students who find all six before drawing space their panels well.

Grade the captions

Stick figures are fine, and the Director's Note says so. Hold students to the captions instead, one sentence per panel.

Lesson in their words

Many students copy the last line for question 3. Ask them to say the lesson another way, such as small friends can help big ones.
