Non-Chronological Report: Independent Writing Assessment

Year 6 EnglishWriting5 pages

About this worksheet

A five-page Year 6 writing assessment built on a volcano fact sheet. The notes fall into four sections: how volcanoes form at plate boundaries, types of volcano, the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 and living near a volcano. A labelled diagram shows the magma chamber, main vent, crater and lava flow. Pupils sort the notes into an introduction and three subheaded sections, then write the report on a full page of lines. The teacher marks it on a grid of four Year 6 statements. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 6 writing.

Curriculum objectives covered

Writing - composition

โ€œUsing further organisational and presentational devices to structure text and to guide the reader [for example, headings, bullet points, underlining]โ€

The planning grid asks for a subheading for each section, and row 1 of the teacher grid assesses it.

Writing - composition

โ€œUsing a wide range of devices to build cohesion within and across paragraphsโ€

Pupils list cohesive devices on their plan, and row 2 of the grid looks for pronouns, synonyms and adverbials.

Writing - composition

โ€œNoting and developing initial ideas, drawing on reading and research where necessaryโ€

Pupils turn the fact sheet into short notes on the planning grid before they write.

Writing - vocabulary, grammar and punctuation

โ€œUsing passive verbs to affect the presentation of information in a sentenceโ€

Row 3 of the grid looks for passive constructions, which the fact sheet models in lines such as Pompeii and Herculaneum were buried.

What's inside this worksheet

Fact Sheet

Bullet notes on tectonic plates, magma and lava, composite, shield and cinder volcanoes, Pompeii and Herculaneum, and geothermal energy in Iceland.

Planning Grid

Rows for an introduction and three sections. Pupils write a subheading for each and note facts, technical words and cohesive devices, not full sentences.

Non-Chronological Report

A page of lines for the finished report, with a reminder to use headings, subheadings and paragraphs.

Teacher Assessment Grid

Four statements with examples, each marked Secure or Not Yet, and a Next Step box.

How teachers use it

After a geography unit

Set it once pupils have studied volcanoes, so the content is familiar and the assessment is about the writing.

Timed write

Allow 15 minutes for the plan and 40 for the report. Collect the plans too, because they show which facts each pupil chose to leave out.

Moderation

Mark three reports with a colleague using the grid. Two columns make it quick to see where you disagree.
