Persuasive Letter Writing: Support Sheet

Year 6 EnglishWriting6 pages

About this worksheet

A six-page support sheet for Year 6 pupils who find persuasive letters hard, with exemplar answers. It starts with a model paragraph about longer break times in which a rhetorical question, emotive language, a fact and a group of three are labelled. Two questions ask why the writer chose Furthermore and cooped up. Pupils then complete four sentence frames, plan four paragraphs from starters and finish a formal letter to the headteacher of Oakfield Primary School. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 6 writing composition.

How teachers use it

One issue only

Ask each pupil to choose a single issue before Part 2, so the frames, the planner and the letter all argue the same case.

Answer the objection

For question 6, one partner says the excuse aloud and the other answers it with the Although frame. Then both write.

A real reader

If your headteacher agrees, deliver the best letters and ask for a written reply. Pupils take more care when someone will answer.
