Newspaper Report Writing Frame

Year 6 EnglishWriting4 pages

About this worksheet

A newspaper report frame for Year 6, three pages plus a model answer. Page 1 is a short model report about a dolphin freed from Seabrook Harbour after the tide went out, with every feature named. Page 2 gives reporter's notes on a fox stranded on the roof of Oakfield Primary School, and the 5Ws are already set out in a grid. On page 3 pupils write their own report in a seven-row frame, from headline to closing. The answer page has a finished fox report and a checklist. It covers England National Curriculum writing composition.

Curriculum objectives covered

Writing - composition

โ€œIdentifying the audience for and purpose of the writing, selecting the appropriate form and using other similar writing as models for their ownโ€

Page 1 names the audience and purpose, and pupils follow its structure for the fox report on page 3.

Writing - composition

โ€œUsing further organisational and presentational devices to structure text and to guide the reader [for example, headings, bullet points, underlining]โ€

The frame gives the headline, byline, quote, reported speech and closing a row each, so the report keeps its newspaper shape.

Writing - vocabulary, grammar and punctuation

โ€œUsing passive verbs to affect the presentation of information in a sentenceโ€

The Events row asks for one passive sentence, such as The fox was brought down safely by firefighters.

What's inside this worksheet

Dolphin Rescued from Harbour

A model report with each part named in bold: headline, byline, a 5Ws opening, events in the past tense, a direct quote, reported speech and a closing.

Plan the Fox Rescue Report

Four notes, including the headteacher's exact words about a fox peering through the skylight, and a 5Ws grid filled in from them.

Write Your Fox Rescue Report

A table with a prompt for each feature. Pupils write one passive sentence starting 'The fox was', quote the headteacher and sum up the wildlife officers without quotation marks.

Answers

A model report headed Fox Rescued from School Roof, with a checklist of features to mark against.

How teachers use it

Shared reading

Read the dolphin report aloud with the bold labels covered. Pupils name each part before you reveal it.

Make the plan harder

The 5Ws grid on page 2 is already complete. For confident writers, fold it under and have them build their own grid from the four notes.

Passive voice

Model turning 'Firefighters brought the fox down' into 'The fox was brought down by firefighters' before pupils fill the Events row.
