Reflection or Translation?

Year 5 MathsReflection and Translation3 pages

About this worksheet

Year 5 sheet on telling a reflection from a translation, over three pages. Pupils look at eight pairs of shapes, A and B, on small grids. They write whether each move is a reflection or a translation and describe it, for example how many squares right or up. Two of the reflections have a dashed mirror line and two do not. Page 2 asks how to tell the two apart and has two blank grids for pupils to draw their own. Page 3 is the key. It follows the England National Curriculum for position and direction.

โ€œidentify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a reflection or translation, using the appropriate language, and know that the shape has not changedโ€

What's inside this worksheet

Reflection or translation

Eight grids, each with Shape A and Shape B. Four moves are translations and four are reflections. Pupils write which it is and describe the move in words.

Explain and Draw

Question 9 asks how pupils can tell a reflection from a translation. Question 10 gives two blank grids, My Reflection and My Translation, where pupils draw Shape A and Shape B and describe the move.

Answers

The move for each pair, such as translated 4 left and 4 down or reflected in the horizontal mirror line, with notes on what to look for in the drawings.

How teachers use it

Where is the mirror

Items 5 and 7 have no mirror line drawn. Ask pupils to mark where it would go. The key says halfway between Shape A and Shape B.

Swap and check

After question 10, pupils swap books and decide whether their partner's drawings show a reflection or a translation.

Talk before writing

Discuss question 9 in pairs first. A flag or an L-shape on the board shows the flip of a reflection clearly.
