Reflection and Translation Check

Year 5 MathsReflection and Translation2 pages

About this worksheet

A one-page Year 5 check on reflection and translation, with the answer key on page 2. Pupils reflect an L shape in a vertical mirror line and translate a flag 3 squares left and 2 squares up. They then write the new coordinates of the triangle (1, 1), (4, 1) and (1, 3) after a move of 4 right and 2 up. The last question shows two triangles, A and B, and asks whether B is a reflection or a translation of A. It follows England National Curriculum position and direction.

Curriculum objectives covered

Geometry - position and direction

โ€œidentify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a reflection or translation, using the appropriate language, and know that the shape has not changedโ€

Questions 1 and 2 ask pupils to draw a reflection and a translation, and question 4 asks them to tell the two apart and explain.

Geometry - position and direction

โ€œdescribe positions on a 2-D grid as coordinates in the first quadrantโ€

Question 3 gives three vertices as coordinates and asks for the new coordinates after a translation.

What's inside this worksheet

Reflect the L

A grid with a dashed vertical mirror line and an L shape on its left. Pupils draw the reflection on the right of the line.

Translate the flag

A flag, a square on a pole, drawn on a blank grid. Pupils move it 3 squares left and 2 squares up.

Coordinates of a moved triangle

A triangle at (1, 1), (4, 1) and (1, 3) on axes numbered 0 to 10. Pupils write the three new coordinates after 4 right and 2 up.

Reflection or translation

Triangles A and B on a grid. Pupils tick reflected or translated and write how they know.

Answer key

Written descriptions of the reflected L and the moved flag, the coordinates (5, 3), (8, 3) and (5, 5), and the answer that B is a translation of A, 4 right and 1 down.

How teachers use it

Unit check

Use it after teaching both reflection and translation. Question 4 shows whether pupils can tell the two apart from the picture alone.

Coordinates starter

Question 3 works as a quick starter on its own. Ask pupils to add 4 to every x value and 2 to every y value before they check the key.

Checking the reflection

For question 1, let pupils fold along the dashed line or hold a small mirror on it to test the L. Mark question 2 by counting squares from the pole of the flag.
