Reflect in a Vertical Mirror Line

Year 5 MathsReflection and Translation3 pages

About this worksheet

Year 5 reflection practice on squared grids, over three pages. A worked example shows a triangle and its reflection in a vertical mirror line, with dotted lines from each vertex to the line. Pupils then reflect six shapes: a right-angled triangle, an L-shape, a rectangle, a flag, a shape touching the line and an arrow. Two written questions follow. Page 3 is the answer key and draws every reflection. It follows the England National Curriculum for position and direction.

Curriculum objectives covered

Geometry - position and direction

โ€œidentify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a reflection or translation, using the appropriate language, and know that the shape has not changedโ€

Items 1 to 6 ask pupils to draw the reflection of a shape in a vertical line. Question 8 asks what stays the same, so pupils say the shape has not changed.

What's inside this worksheet

Worked example

A triangle and its reflection on a grid, with dotted lines from each vertex to the mirror line. The steps say to count squares to the line, then mark the same number on the other side.

Reflect each shape

Six grids with a vertical mirror line: a right-angled triangle, an L-shape, a rectangle, a flag, a shape touching the line and an arrow. Pupils join the new vertices with a ruler.

Thinking About Reflection

Question 7 asks how far each reflected vertex is from the mirror line. Question 8 asks what stays the same after a reflection.

Answers

A small drawing of each completed reflection, then written answers to questions 7 and 8.

How teachers use it

Start of the lesson

Copy the worked example onto the board and ask pupils to count squares from each corner to the line before anyone picks up a ruler.

Item 3

The rectangle sits to the right of the mirror line, so pupils must reflect to the left. Watch for anyone who draws it on the right again.

Checking

Give pairs a small mirror or tracing paper to test each drawing, then compare with the pictures on page 3.
