Reflect in a Horizontal Mirror Line

Year 5 MathsReflection and Translation4 pages

About this worksheet

Year 5 reflection in a horizontal mirror line, over four pages. Pupils reflect six shapes into the bottom half of their grids: a rectangle, a right-angled triangle, an L-shape, a trapezium, a T-shape and a pentagon. Two of the shapes touch the line. Part 2 uses one large grid with a vertical and a horizontal line, and pupils reflect an L-shape into all four quarters. Pages 3 and 4 are the answer key. It follows the England National Curriculum for position and direction.

Curriculum objectives covered

Geometry - position and direction

โ€œidentify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a reflection or translation, using the appropriate language, and know that the shape has not changedโ€

Items 1 to 6 reflect a shape in a horizontal line. Question 7 reflects an L-shape in a vertical and then a horizontal line.

What's inside this worksheet

Horizontal Reflections

Six grids, each with a dashed horizontal mirror line and a shape above it. Pupils reflect each shape into the bottom half and use a ruler for the lines.

Four-Quadrant Reflection

One large grid with a vertical and a horizontal mirror line and an L-shape in the top left quarter. Pupils reflect it across, then reflect both top shapes down. They may colour the finished pattern.

Answers for Part 1

Each reflection is drawn and described in words, such as the reflected rectangle being 1 square below the line, 4 squares wide and 2 squares tall.

Answer for Part 2

The grid with an L-shape in all four quarters, and a sentence on where each one sits.

How teachers use it

Counting squares

Ask pupils to count the squares from each corner to the mirror line before they draw. Items 4 and 6 have corners at different distances from the line.

Shapes on the line

Items 2 and 5 touch the mirror line. Ask pupils which points stay where they are and why.

Early finishers

Hand out page 2 to pupils who finish early. The instructions let them colour the four-part pattern at the end.
