Find the Relative Clause

Year 5 EnglishRelative Clauses3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page Year 5 grammar sheet on relative clauses. A box at the top says a relative clause adds information about a noun and starts with who, which, where, when, whose or that. Pupils underline the clause in ten sentences, from The dog, which was very muddy, ran into the kitchen to The bicycle, which has a blue frame, belongs to Leo. Page 2 asks which noun four of the clauses describe and which pronoun is used for people. The key shows every clause underlined. It follows England National Curriculum grammar for Years 5 and 6.

What's inside this worksheet

Find the Relative Clause

Pupils underline the clause in each of ten sentences. The pronouns include who in The boy who lives next door plays the drums and whose in My aunt, whose cat is called Pepper, is a vet.

How Relative Clauses Work

A table repeats four of the sentences and pupils write the noun each clause describes. One more question asks which relative pronoun is used for people.

Answers

All ten sentences are printed again with the clause underlined, followed by the four nouns. The pronoun question accepts who, with whose or that also allowed.

How teachers use it

Starter

Read sentences 1 and 4 aloud, where the clause sits between commas, and ask pupils to lift it out. Then let them underline the rest alone.

Partner marking

Pupils swap sheets and check the underlining against page 3. Sentences 5 and 6 have no commas, so they are the ones where pupils most often stop too early.

Homework

Send it home once you have taught all six pronouns. The key on page 3 lets a parent check the work without help from you.
