Combine the Sentences

Year 5 EnglishRelative Clauses3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page Year 5 sheet on joining sentences with a relative clause. A worked example turns The dog is very friendly. It lives next door. into one sentence. Pupils then combine eight pairs, including The castle is old. It stands on a hill. and The tree fell over. Its roots were rotten. Page 2 asks which relative pronoun they used most, and pupils write a pair of sentences for a partner to combine. The key gives sample answers, with a second version where a pair can be joined two ways. It follows England National Curriculum grammar for Years 5 and 6.

Worked Example and Eight Pairs

One example with a which version and a that version, then eight pairs in two columns. Pair 5 needs where and pair 6 needs whose.

Reflect and Create

Pupils say which pronoun they used most and why. Then they write a pair of short sentences in a box for a partner, with room for the combined answer.

Answers

A sample answer for each of the eight pairs, with alternatives for pairs 1, 2, 4 and 7, and an example pair for question 2.

How teachers use it

Shared example

Do pair 1 on the board and show both versions, which with commas and that without. Pupils choose one for their own sheet.

Partner swap

Use Reflect and Create question 2 as a swap. Each pupil combines the partner's pair, then they compare answers.

Whose challenge

Pair 6 is the one that needs whose. Watch who writes The tree, which roots were rotten and stop to talk about it.
